A Very Prejudice Charles Darwin Admits Being Wrong

Darwin, for many the father of evolution, thought certain groups of people lower on the evolutionary scale than others. He once wrote, "At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised [sic] races of the man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world." (Descent of Man, 1871)

Hmmm, sounds a little like someone else, doesn't he? Where do you think Hitler got his inspiration and reasoning from?

David Klinghoffer in the National Review Online states, "The standard biographies of Hitler almost all point to the influence of Darwinism on their subject. In Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, Alan Bullock writes: 'The basis of Hitler’s political beliefs was a crude Darwinism.' What Hitler found objectionable about Christianity was its rejection of Darwin’s theory: 'Its teaching, he declared, was a rebellion against the natural law of selection by struggle and the survival of the fittest.'”

It may come as a shock that Darwin ended up sending money to missionaries who worked among people he denounced as barbarians. A friend of his wrote of it in 1885, saying, "Darwin has often expressed to me...it was utterly useless to send Missionaries to such a set of savages as the Fuegians, probably the very lowest of the human race. I had always replied that I did not believe any human being existed too low to comprehend the simple message of the Gospel of Christ. After many years...he wrote to me that in recent accounts of the Mission proved to him that he had been wrong."

Darwin ended up supporting this society the final 15 years of his life.

Unfortunately, his change of mind did not change his affect on history. In the Nazi propaganda film, Victims of the Past, the audience is shown a retarded person as the narrator intones, “In the last few decades, mankind has sinned terribly against the law of natural selection. We haven’t just maintained life unworthy of life, we have even allowed it to multiply.”

That just makes me sick.

Why do you think people ignore how completely politically incorrect, intolerant, and bigoted Darwin was? Does society tend to choose which aspects of a truth or a lie they want to believe if it serves their purpose, while ignoring the realities that come along with it? How does this affect our current culture's idea of truth?

  1. Thank you for this information. We have to conclude, that if Darwin had not published his famous book, then, six million Jews wouldn't have been exterminated?

Since Darwin supported this Christian missionary, doesn't that mean he wasn't an atheist after all. Did he believe in God? Did he believe that God created the heavens and the earth?

Did he ever own up that his theory was worthless in terms of explaining the origin of life? Even if it were true, that doesn't negate the existence of God like his followers think it does?

  2. Good questions, Larry. Whether Darwin ever did search for truth enough to find it, I know one thing: our actions matter to those in the world around us, like Darwin's did to future generations of Jews, like the missionary's did to Darwin's own false perspective, and like ours do to the world around us.
    Thanks for stopping by!
